How to Rotate PDF Pages

Save the rotation, not just the view

A PDF reader may offer a temporary Rotate View command that changes how you see a page without saving that orientation in the file. If a document looks sideways again when shared or reopened, check whether you changed the view or saved a rotated PDF.

Rotate PDF adds the chosen angle to each selected page and creates a new downloadable file. Keep the original, download the result, and reopen that downloaded copy to confirm the saved orientation. Here, permanent rotation means it is saved in the output PDF; you can still rotate it again later.

Choose the angle and the exact pages

Open Rotate PDF and select one PDF. Choose 90 degrees clockwise for a quarter turn, 180 degrees for a half turn, or 270 degrees clockwise for the equivalent of a quarter turn counterclockwise. The angle is an additional turn, not a target orientation.

In Pages, enter all to rotate every page, 2 to rotate only the second page, 1-3 for an inclusive range, or 2,4,6 for a list. You can combine them as 1-3,5. Count from the first page of the file as page 1; a printed page label such as iii or 10 is not the page position used here.

Check the page count before entering a selection: 0, a page beyond the end, or a reversed range such as 5-2 produces an error. Blank input means all pages, so enter an explicit selection when only a few pages need correction.

Click Rotate PDF, then download the result. For pages needing different angles, process one group at a time: download the first result, select that saved file for the next operation, and use the other page numbers and angle.

Tested example: three different starting rotations

In a production browser test on October 12, 2026, we used a three-page PDF with saved page rotations of 0, 90, and 180 degrees. We selected all pages and added 90 degrees clockwise. Inspection of the downloaded PDF confirmed three pages with rotations of 90, 180, and 270 degrees, respectively.

To reproduce the comparison, start with a non-sensitive three-page PDF whose saved rotations are known to be 0, 90, and 180 degrees. Select 90 degrees clockwise and all, process it, and inspect the downloaded file. The expected saved rotations are 90, 180, and 270 degrees; adding the same angle preserves the differences between pages.

This test confirms relative rotation for that sample, not automatic detection of upright text. A scan can have sideways image content even when its saved rotation is 0 degrees. Judge each page visually and select only the pages that need the same correction; rotating every page by 90 degrees does not make mixed orientations uniformly upright.

Download, reopen, and check

Open the downloaded file, usually named with a -rotated.pdf suffix, rather than the original or a viewer tab that still has a temporary rotation applied. Check the selected pages and at least one unselected page if you rotated only part of the document, and confirm the page count.

Check text, images, and any forms or annotations you depend on before sharing the file. The tool changes saved page rotation rather than rebuilding the page as an image, but the three-page test does not establish preservation of every feature in every PDF.

Scans, passwords, and limits

Rotation is not OCR. It does not add searchable text to an image-only scan or recognize which way the text should face. If your input has selectable text, check that you can still select or search it in the downloaded result; do not assume a scanned page will become searchable.

Rotate PDF has no password field. If an encrypted PDF cannot be opened, use Unlock PDF with the password only for a document you own or are authorized to modify, then select the unlocked copy here. A wrong password or an unreadable PDF can still prevent processing; unlocking is not a guarantee that every file will work.

The upload limit is 100 MB per PDF. A large or complex document may still exceed the memory available in your browser. If processing fails, keep the original and do not treat a preview or a download click as proof that the saved file is correct.

A practical mixed-scan correction plan

Suppose a six-page scan has upright pages 1-3 and 5, page 4 needs a quarter turn clockwise, and page 6 is upside down. First apply 90 degrees to page 4, download the result, then use that saved result to apply 180 degrees to page 6. Selecting all in either pass would also turn the pages that were already correct.

After the second pass, check all six pages upright in a fresh viewer, with special attention to page 4 to ensure the first correction was carried forward. This is an illustrative workflow, separate from the dated three-page test above.
