Password protection basics

A user password opens the document. An owner password controls permissions such as printing, copying, and editing.

Protect PDF lets you set both and choose reader permissions. If only one password is entered, it is used for both opening the document and owner permissions. Enforcement of permissions depends on the reader.

Steps

Upload the PDF and enter a user password, owner password, or both.

Choose which actions readers are allowed to perform.

Click Protect PDF, then download the encrypted file.

Password safety

There is no password recovery service. Keep your passwords safely and retain an authorized original so you are not dependent on recovering access to the encrypted copy.

Use Unlock PDF when you have permission to remove protection from a document you own.

Choose access control before permissions

If recipients must enter a password before reading, set a user password. Use a different owner password when you also want separate permission settings. In this tool, supplying only an owner password also makes that password necessary to open the file; it is not a permissions-only mode.

Example: for a draft that a reviewer should read and print, allow printing and leave modification disabled, then send the opening password through a separate channel. Permission flags are reader-dependent and do not prevent screenshots or a recipient from sharing the password.

Verify using a fresh open

Close the result preview and open the downloaded protected copy in a fresh viewer session. Confirm an absent or wrong password does not open it, then use the intended user password and check the permitted actions in the recipient’s reader.

Retain the original in your normal secure storage and keep the passwords safely. Omni PDF offers no password-recovery service. If you only need a visible DRAFT label, watermarking communicates status without requiring every recipient to manage a password.
