How to Unlock a PDF

Remove password protection and restrictions from a PDF you own or have permission to unlock.

Examples describe expected workflows unless a dated test is explicitly identified. Check the downloaded result against your own document before sharing it.

When you can unlock a PDF

Unlock PDF removes encryption from a document when you have the password. If the file has no user password but restricts printing or copying, the tool can remove those restrictions.

Only unlock files you own or have explicit permission to modify.

Unlock steps

Upload the protected PDF and enter the password if prompted. Click Unlock PDF to remove the encryption.

The unlocked file is created locally in your browser. The original protected file stays on your device.

Password and security

You must know the password to unlock a user-password-protected PDF. The tool cannot bypass unknown passwords.

After unlocking, the PDF behaves like any normal document โ€” you can merge, split, or edit it with other tools.

Diagnose the password problem first

If a PDF asks for a password before showing any page, enter a known authorized password in Unlock PDF. If it opens without one but disables an action in a reader, try the file without a password first. A processing error can also mean the document is unreadable; it is not proof that a password is wrong.

For example, to extract a permitted appendix from an encrypted report, unlock the report, download it, and select that unlocked copy in Extract PDF Pages. Do not keep selecting the protected original in the second tool.

Verify the copy and handle it as unprotected

Close the viewer and open the downloaded -unlocked.pdf in a new session. Confirm it opens without a password, check page count and content, and try the particular action you needed. Successful decryption does not establish that every form or signature survives rewriting.

The output no longer has the original encryption barrier. Store and share it accordingly; retain the protected original when that is your official copy. If you do not know the required password, ask the document owner for access rather than retrying conversion tools.
